Transforming Rail Inspection
Unlocking Beyond Visual Line of Sight drone operations for Network Rail
The Challenge
Network Rail are responsible for the largest rail network in the UK. With 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, relying on thousands of signals and stations. Drones are increasingly addressing critical challenges for Network Rail. These include managing trespass (with 18,517 incidents yr22/23), track and overhead line inspections, alongside route-proving (i.e. post-storms line assessment with 1,075 days of delay each year). Enabling effective drone use, Network Rail are looking to operate Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS).
BVLOS involves operating a drone beyond the pilot's direct view. If a pilot can’t maintain continuous and an unaided view of the drone they must consider suitable mitigations to ensure safe operation. This increased safety risk requires an Operating safety Case (OSC) that is approved by the UK’s Aviation Regulator, UK Civil Aviation Authority, outlining the operation and justify its safety. This requires a strong knowledge of aviation safety, the operations and the systems being flown.
“The expertise and support of the Ajuno team was pivotal in the success of a project to develop and trial BVLOS(VM) capabilities at Network Rail. We’re enthusiastic about Ajuno’s growing capabilities and the future opportunities they may be able to help the rail industry to develop and deliver.”

The solution
With our support, Network Rail trialled BVLOS operations with Visual Mitigation (VM). This involved using ‘Observers’, trained flight crew that would maintain a line of sight with the drone. This method was chosen as the most suitable because of the importance of managing their railways lines safely and at long-distances.
We supported Network Rail to develop a robust safety case, securing approval from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to operate BVLOS up to 3.35km from the pilot. Our team then planned and conducted flight trials and training for Network Rail pilots.
The impact
Implementing BVLOS VM operations for Network Rail has provided drone pilots over 6x increase in operating range. This enables them to address critical challenges, such as asset inspection, much more efficiently. As this is expanded across the network, the data captured will improve network management and decision-making. Ultimately, it will enhance the overall resilience of one of the largest national infrastructure assets, improving rail travel for us all.
