Enhancing wildlife conservation on the Isle of Man using drones: supporting the Manx Wildlife Trust

The Challenge

The Manx Wildlife Trust is the leading nature conservation charity in the Isle of Man, working to protect and conserve the island's wildlife and habitats. The Manx Wildlife identified they could be using drones to improve their conservations efforts but were unclear on the following questions:

How could the trust be using drones?

Which systems should they be using?

How should they establish these new capabilities?

“The workshop Ajuno has facilitated has been a great opportunity to get everyone in the same room to discuss how Manx Wildlife Trust could use drones, what drones we need, and how practical that may be.”

The solution

The Manx Wildlife Trust selected Ajuno to bring together the team and understand drone use cases and operations, exploring how these could be implemented to enhance conservation efforts across the Isle of Man.

Ajuno worked with the team to prioritise use cases, before helping the trust understand the most appropriate systems and necessary training to establish these new capabilities.

The impact

Providing a clear overview of drone use cases and operations has enabled The Manx Wildlife Trust to feel confident they are taking the correct approach to deploying drones across the Island, minimising risk in procuring the wrong system, and maximising the potential benefits from a new drone capability for conservation efforts.

“The workshop was very informative… drones are the new element for ecology, giving us access to new areas and behaviours we were not able to see before. Here on the Isle of Man, drones have the potential to reveal where species are located.”

Greg Watson -Trainee Ecologist at Ecology Vanner
